En distanciel Empire and International Law in Nineteenth-Century Latin America: A Neverending Story
In light of recent US aggressions in Latin America, this seminar will explore the long history of empire and international law in the region. At first sight, the relationship between empire and international law may appear antagonistic. Yet, by looking at nineteenth-century Latin America, we will find that this relationship proves far more complex. Particularly the Río de la Plata stood out as a site where empire and international law became deeply intertwined. British and French imperial presence in this region expanded from the early nineteenth century onwards, and new imperial dynamics gave rise to a number of international legal questions ranging from the protection of foreigners to the principle of non-intervention. In this seminar, we will look through the eyes of various imperial agents and local actors in the Río de la Plata who engaged with these questions. In doing so, we aim to understand how empire and international law in the region evolved in an intertwined manner, mutually shaping one another throughrecurring episodes of contestation.
